Galveston No Refusal Weekend for Motorcycle Rally

Galveston is expecting thousands of motorcycle riders to visit the island this weekend for the Lone Star Rally. As a result, the Galveston DA has announced that this weekend will be a no refusal weekend down in Galveston County. Police will have a judge on at their location point ready to issue warrants for suspected drunk drivers. While police have stepped up security down on the island they do not any issues. The rally has started to become mainstream event having people of all types interested in showing off their bikes. The linked news article even goes as far as saying it is a family friendly event.
One reason for the no refusal weekend could be because of the recent high levels of fatal car accidents that involved motorcycle riders and alcohol. “Even though motorcycles account for only about 3 percent of registered vehicles on the road, motorcycle riders are dramatically overrepresented in fatal crashes involving alcohol.” League City is included in Galveston County and could be within the designated DWI check point for this weekend.Texas has been stepping up DWI enforcement and with the holiday season quickly approaching many expect an increase in DWI arrests. DWI’s can be very expensive and this is why the public awareness groups have the slogan – DWI, you can’t afford it. “A DWI arrest and conviction in Texas can cost $17,000 or more: fees include car towing and impound fee, bail, attorney fees, court costs, hearing and fees to regain and retain a driver’s license, DWI fines, probation costs, fees for extended proof of insurance, plus insurance rate hikes.”

So if you plan on drinking this weekend stay at home, call a sober friend, or call a taxi cab so that you can get home safely. Our Galveston Personal Injury Lawyer routinely sees the damage that can occur from a Drunk Driving Accident and Motorcycle Accidents. Recently, there have been two police officers who lost their life as the result of intoxicated drivers in Texas. Additionally, just the other day an intoxicated driver crashed his car into a police car almost hitting the officer who was luckily out of his vehicle and avoided injury.
