However, in December 2019, Celadon Group Inc. and was shuddering its doors after 34 years of providing service nationwide. The announcement finalized a turbulent time for the transporter after dealing directly with creditors and driver issues. Rumors had world for more than a week that lenders were in the process of repossessing Celadon Group’s equipment.

Celadon Group was an LTL (less than truckload) carrier, meaning the company delivers mixed freight. This type of trucking is opposite a Truckload (LT) carrier that delivers trucks containing similar products, goods, and materials to multiple locations. In 2018, Celadon Group Inc. generated an annual revenue of more than $856 million, with more than 2500 drivers operating 2390 semi-trucks.

During the tumultuous time of bankruptcy, the company failed to tell employees of the expected shutdown while at the same time advising customers it was time to find another transportation provider to deliver their goods. Customers and employees state that the lack of communication at the top of Celadon Group leadership added to the confusion of what came next.

Early reports indicate that two of the company’s executives had been accused of participating in a $60 million fraud scheme. The US Attorney of the Southern District of Indiana charged the executives with crimes, including fraud. The attorney alleges that the executives had concealed millions of dollars in company losses from lenders and shareholders. Both men were arrested and charged with nine counts of fraud. If found guilty, the executives could spend decades in prison. The bankruptcy is expected to affect 4000 jobs.
