Nine Decades of Cargo Delivery

As a local cargo hauler in 1923, ABF Freight System, Inc. was founded in Fort Smith, Arkansas under the name OK Transfer. By 1935, the company changed its name after acquiring Arkansas Motor Freight. By the 1940s, the local transporter had transformed into a regional carrier with an array of routes from Louisiana to Missouri. Over the years, it has evolved into a worldwide provider of end-to-end cargo delivery and other supply chain solutions.

Even though ABF Freight Systems operates their business according to the rules and regulations of the Department of Transportation, accidents still happen. Like all freight companies, ABF maintains demanding transport schedules. Their drivers are often given constraining deadlines and commitments, causing them to make poor driving decisions.

Many of their 18-wheelers, semi-trucks and cargo vans can weigh upwards of 80 tons when fully loaded. With a stressed or fatigued driver behind the wheel, catastrophic accidents occur, injuring victims or causing death.

ABF Company Statistics Regarding Accidents Involving Injuries & Fatalities

Unfortunately, with the millions of miles traveled every year, the fleets of trucks managed by ABF are still involved in numerous accidents. According to FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) management information systems, the freight company has been involved in serious collisions, causing injuries and fatalities. At the beginning of 2014, ABF Freight trucks have been involved in over 235 accidents in the last 24 months, resulting in 85 cases of injury and five fatalities.

Routine inspections of ABF drivers have taken some auto transport truckers off the road. Of the 2500+ drivers inspected over the last 24 months, 0.9 percent were removed from service, which is far below the 5.51 percent national average.

Most of the regional and national cargo deliveries by ABF Freight are primarily LTL (less than a truckload) shipments. Drivers often pick-up small loads along specific routes and consolidate the truck into a single load from multiple customers (shippers). Also, the company provides ABF U-Packing containers transported from one location to a new destination, where the customer loads and unloads the cargo.

Causes of Commercial Truck Accidents

Commercial truck accidents across the nation’s highways occur for various reasons. Some reasons for an ABF freight truck accident are significantly more prevalent than others. They include:

  • Driver Fatigue – Driving while fatigued can be just as potentially dangerous and catastrophic as driving drunk. Truckers who spend most of their days behind the wheel can become tired, making careless mistakes that endanger motorists and passengers on the road. Fatigue can lead to falling asleep, drifting into other lanes, driving at excessive speed, or failing to use headlights and turn signals.
  • Distracted Driving – Unsafe driving behavior can occur when the trucker becomes distracted when talking on the phone, reading, texting or merely becoming complacent after long hours on the road.
  • Blind Spots – Because of the sheer size of the truck, inexperienced or untrained drivers can miss objects when making turns or backing up caused by the blind spots around the vehicle.
  • Improper Loading/Unloading – Loaders must position cargo correctly, according to weight and distribution of freight inside the trailer, box container or on the flatbed. When loads are positioned or secured improperly, cargo can shift unexpectedly, or make it difficult for the driver to control the truck and trailer safely.
  • Mechanical Failure – Defective components including tires, brake pads, signal lights, and others can cause horrific accidents on the roadway. Mechanical failure is a crucial component to many dangerous driving conditions, placing the trucker and all other motorists sharing the road in grave danger.
